What to Bring to a Notarization
A Quick Checklist to Help Your Appointment Go Smoothly
When you’re preparing for a notarization, showing up with the right items can save time, increase efficiency, prevent delays, and ensure your document is completed correctly. Here’s what you should always have ready:
Valid Photo ID
Bring a valid, government-issued, unexpired ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID. Your name on your ID must match the name on your ID and your photo on your ID must resemble you.
Unsigned Documents
Have your documents ready and unsigned. The notary must witness your signature to prevent fraud and ensure legality. Don’t remove any pages or staples from the documents. Another tip is to make sure that the document does not have any blank spaces or missing pages. The documents must be complete and intact from start to finish. This can cause a delay in getting the documents authenticated.
Witnesses When Required
Some documents require one or two independent witnesses. These witnesses must have their own valid ID, be aware and able to sign, and not be named in the documents. Check to see if you need witnesses before the appointment.
Pro Tip
If you are unsure about a requirement, ask ahead of time. A small question today can prevent a big delay tomorrow.
When you’re prepared, the notarization process is fast, smooth, and secure - ensuring your signature carries the protection it deserves.
